Remember, you are a product of your environment. The principle of association says that who you will be five years from now comes down to two primary influences: the people you associate with and the books you read.

I recommend firing the committee and going with your heart and a strategic plan. Be more committed to the dream than to the reality.

6. Create a Plan and Take Substantial Action: If you fail to plan - you plan to fail

"Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do," wrote the German philosopher Goethe.

Top performers understand that lasting success is a numbers game: the more action you take, the more results you reap. Create a plan with results based outcomes.

For example, don't just jot down "Make Calls Introducing Business.' Instead, create a plan that has a result in a specific time. "Call 10 Influencers in my community and secure lunch with 70% of them to introduce business and create a commitment of support by August 1.'

One of the toughest days of my business was my first day, like everyone else who starts a business theirs got to be a first client. Someone has to be the first person to say yes and pay you money. I than informed him that I would like to help him write one, I shared my ideas on compensation and he agreed to the project and all this only took about two minutes.

Easy, someone's got to be your first client, find someone, anyone. Secondly, spend a few minutes figuring what someone needs and go offer to help them with that. Thirdly, be relaxed and clear about what you're offering and what's in it for both of you. And in 2009 the Royal Mint for the first time has issued quarter sovereigns with a nominal value of 5 shillings. Obviously the nominal value has nothing to do with their real value in modern times.

Gold Sovereigns were produced in large numbers until World War I, when the British pound was removed from the gold standard. Until 1932, sovereigns were produced only at branch mints around the British Commonwealth, specifically in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Bombay, Ottawa, and Pretoria. Production was then halted until 1957, when gold sovereigns began to be minted once again, to prevent the debasing of the coins' value through counterfeiting.

Until 1982, sovereigns were minted as regular bullion, but from 1982 to 1999 were produced only as proof coins for collectors. Since 2000, Sovereigns have once again been minted as bullion coins, whose value depends mainly on their weight in gold, and not on numismatic prestige.

As mentioned earlier, British Gold Sovereign coins have a nominal value. But their real value is determined both by the current market price of their gold content plus variable numismatic value, which varies massively depending on the specific coin and buyer demand. Newly minted bullion coins should theoretically cost approximately the market value of their weight in gold plus a minimal premium, but older sovereigns can sell for much more. Historically, British Gold Sovereigns were regularly removed circulation by the Royal Mint and their gold content reminted into new coins. There were also buybacks of coins that had lost some of their weight in circulation, which were exchanged for full weight sovereigns. Because of this history of reminting, old British gold coins often have extraordinary numismatic value because of their rarity.

Collectors love sovereigns and they can have tremendous numismatic value because of their history and rarity. But these same strengths make old British sovereigns inappropriate for simple investors. Such investors would be better off staying away from numismatic coins and buying only bullion coins, whose value depends on their gold content rather than rarity or aesthetics. Bullion sovereigns minted in recent years would be appropriate. But even if buying bullion sovereigns as an investor, one potential pitfall of sovereigns is the unusual gold content of 7.322 grams, or 0.2354 ounces, which is written nowhere on the coin. This makes British sovereigns less liquid than a standard weighted one ounce gold coin, at least outside of the UK. They can probably be sold to most bullion dealers, because they will be familiar with them. But if there is ever an economic meltdown and you need immediate liquidity for daily transactions, sovereigns may not be widely recognized. They still make a solid investment, but as an emergency supply of real physical money, other one ounce coins are probably a better choice.

Most lending networks allow you to provide micro-loans to borrowers, which you can use to get your feet wet.
  • High Yield Certificate of Deposit - A certificate of deposit (CD) is a type of deposit account that invariably offers a higher yield than a standard savings account. CD's are considered relatively safe and provide a decent return on your investment. Before investing in a CD, use your favorite search engines (don't rely on Google alone! What Would a Man Do?

I just had a free lance writing gig and was hired by someone I already knew. Our relationship has always been strictly professional and yet, this is someone I've kept a friendly rapport with over some eight years. Though I wrote for his publications in the 1990's, I never reported to him directly. So our friendship remained steady - albeit at a distance. He found himself pitching a huge piece of new business recently and asked me to work on it. I posed the usual questions about scope and time frame and of course salary.

When he asked what I would charge, I did some quick math and requested an hourly rate at my standard writing fee. When he replied that he didn't have anywhere near that kind of money, I simply asked him to tell me what he did have. He quickly halved my number and I made the deal.

What actually transpired was I did twice the assessed work for half the fee. Very predictable as it's never failed to go down like that in the past. The one difference was, this time I asked for the remainder of the fee I first named to be deferred to the award of the job - which is fairly likely. At that point, I was offered a job. A much better result than a one time fee. Or was it? A choice that was handed to me and, in some instances, I would not have necessarily accepted.

Why? The pros and cons of a future arrangement are: the job might not materialize, the job might materialize but not to my liking, I might be already be committed to another situation when and if the job does materialize. If I get the deferred fee: it's cash in my hands, I feel satisfied that I was paid for the work performed and I get what I initially asked for. This proves to my possible future employer -should I work for him later on - that I drive a hard bargain and will likely do that in future negotiations with him and with his vendors.

Being tough-minded where money is concerned is a good thing to employers and especially employers who are men.
