There are several types of software that fall either under system software or application software. It is designed to direct and control the hardware. This management of the hardware application allows the operating system to perform. Common operating systems include Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. System software also consists of utilities like disk formatters, device drivers, servers, file managers, and text editors.

Computer software is used to describe a compilation of programs. And, software is very different from hardware. Hardware is described as the physical components of a computer like the hard drive, monitor, or keyboard. Software is basically the programs that are stored on the computer and accessed by the computer's owner or user.

Application software, on the other hand, is used to accomplish certain tasks that do not necessarily involve managing the computer system. It includes savvy business software and interactive games. It can most often be purchased as an assortment of programs that work closely together to accomplish a task for the user. They include spreadsheets like Excel or Microsoft Word. This assortment of programs can be sold as a small package if it is not already installed on the computer or the applications can be sold as what is referred to as a software suite. Microsoft Office comes with other, independent applications and databases like PowerPoint, Word, and Access. Other types include programming, animation, and audio software.

Programming software is convenient because it usually provides tools that allow programmers to write various programs using different programming languages fairly easily. These include, but are not limited to debuggers, text editors, and linkers. Others include C++, Java, and Visual C.

Animation software allows a user to create digital stories through drawings. These days, animation can be done not only in 2D, but in 3D too, thus creating realistic, animated characters. This type is so advanced and appealing that millions of dollars have been made off movies that use it. On the contrary, animation software is not just for professional animators. Amateurs may purchase it for use on their home PC's and upload their homemade videos to various websites for sharing with friends and families. Paint Shop, CorelDRAW, Photoshop, and Animation Shop are some commonly used animation software.

Podcasts are becoming a popular way for people to start their own online radio show or take their current traditional show and place it on to the internet. These radio hosts, whether amateur or professional, are using some form of a well-liked, trendy audio software. These include Wave Pad and can easily produce a professional sounding recording.

Software quality is very important, especially if you are using one like Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows, Linux, etc. If it's defective, it can delete a person's work, crash their computer or do other unexpected things, like upload a virus. This is why a user should exercise caution when downloading any type of free software also known as freeware.
